Collapse building kills school girl

Agona Mankrong (C/R), June 18, GNA - Mr. Dennis Armah-Frimpong, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Agona East has urged people in the area to pull down all death-trap buildings during the raining season to avoid calamities. Mr Armah-Frimpong said there was need for them to bring down those houses which could cause disaster because they can collapse at any time. He gave the advice when he visited the family of the late Pricilla Yamoah, a five-year-old Kindergarten pupil of the Agona Mankrong District Council School who died on the spot after part of their house collapsed on her at Mankrong in the Central Region. He said, it would be advisable for the people in the District whose buildings had developed cracks and can collapse to repair them without delay, instead of waiting for disaster to occur. The DCE on behalf of Mr John Kwesi Agyabeng, MP for Agona East and his own behalf expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and gave the assurance that the Assembly will continue to assist them in time of need. Mr Kweku Yamoah, father of the deceased said the disaster struck when Yamoah was taking her bath in front of their building at about 1730 hours. Mr Kwesi Esuon, Supi of Agona Mankrong said many buildings in the town had become weak while others had developed dangerours cracks which needed to be pulled down, but the people had ignored such warnings. He noted that many people also wished to repair them but they could not, due to the high cost of building materials, especially cement and roofing sheets and appealed to the government to reduce the prices to enable farmers to reonovate their houses.
