Coaches face maltreatment in Ghana - Basigi

The Black Queens coach claims poor treatment from football administrators in the country has led to the demise of several top managers

Ghana female national team coach Yusif Basigi says club owners and administrators are to be blamed for the recurring death of coaches in the country following the non-payment of remittance needed for healthcare.

Since October last year, Ghana has lost five prominent coaches including Ben Kuoffie, who later became the Ghana Football Association president, Cecil Jones Attuquayefio as well as Osam Duodu.

Others include Emmanuel Kwesi Afranie, Sam Arday and recently Herbert Addo, who passed away on Friday.

Addo, until his death, was chasing Hearts of Oak and Aduana Stars for non-payment of salaries and bonuses.

“I will blame our club administrators for the recurring deaths of coaches. They are not concerned about the welfare of the coaches," Basigi told Sports Crusader.

"Coaches remain unprotected and they don’t redeem the monies due to them after serving their contracts.

"I would not blame Ghana football association much since many of the coaches are employed by various clubs with few handling the national teams. So I think we need to resolve this issue of non-payment going forward," he said.

"As a concerned observer, I believe a lot must be done to curb these deaths whose circumstances are avoidable. If coaches are paid well and also receive their owed salaries, they can cater for themselves and their families," he added.

Goal understands that former Asante Kotoko assistant coach Michael Osei is planning to sue the club for lack of compensation following his sacking in February.
