Clip Chief Justice’s Powers

An Accra based legal practitioner, Kwame Akuffo has called for the abolition of the power vested in the Chief Justice to empanel the Supreme Court. According to him, the practice was not good for the country’s young democracy as the system could be abused by a politically-biased CJ who would like to see judgement go in a particular direction.

He said taking into consideration the fact that all judges had their own social backgrounds, judgements from judges could be influenced by other considerations apart from the law and these could in all probability, be exploited by a biased CJ.

He said the way out of this situation was for the necessary laws to be promulgated to ensure that all justices of the Supreme Court sit on cases to remove all taints of bias.
