The Ghanaian clergy and government appointees have been called upon to foster unity and work collaboratively with President John Dramani Mahama in advancing national development.

This appeal came from His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Social Sciences, during an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View show on Channel One TV, aired on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Reflecting on the recently inaugurated National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, Cardinal Turkson emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong and united relationship between the clergy and the presidency.

He noted that the clergy played a significant role during the 2024 elections and should continue to support the president in initiatives that promote national healing and moral renewal.

According to him, the successful launch of the National Day of Prayer was a collective effort, and it is important to recognise that such unity among stakeholders enabled the president to bring the initiative to life.

“For me, it was important to recognise that all the team that helped the President to do all of this [National Day of Prayer], must recognise their own unity with the President,” he said.

“And in so doing, there must be harmony, communication, whatever adjective you want to use. That union must be there. It’s not each one going his way, otherwise it’s not a united form of governance,” he added.

Cardinal Turkson emphasised that both clergy and government ministers must see their roles as part of a shared responsibility under the president’s leadership, in order to ensure coherence in governance and national direction.

“Ministers [clergy] must recognise that what they do attains meaning and significance only in relationship with the leader [Mahama]. And so, that point is important for ministers who collaborate with the President to recognise. We do this by sharing in his spirit,” he said according to citinewsroom.com

About the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, held on July 1, 2025, was marked by an interdenominational Christian service at the forecourt of the State House in Accra, while a Muslim prayer session was held simultaneously at the National Mosque, also in Accra.

The event brought together religious leaders, political figures, civil society organisations, and members of the public in a unified call for peace, economic recovery, moral renewal, and national unity.

It was the first observance of the newly instituted day, which coincides with Ghana’s Republic Day and is intended to become an annual moment of national reflection and gratitude.
