A journalist with Accra-based Citi Fm, Suuk Maxwell was on Tuesday attacked by armed policemen at the trial of suspects in connection with the murder of Lance Corporal Agartha Nana Nabin.

The journalist who since lodged a complaint with the Northern Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), revealed to MyNewsGh.com that he had video recording deleted by the policemen.

According to him, the police officers detailed at the Tamale district court which was hearing the alleged murder case, attacked, seized his phone and unlawfully deleted the video footage he took outside the courtroom.

“I had informed the acting Registrar my intentions to film the suspects when they are coming out from the courtroom which the acting registrar agreed. But when the police noticed that I was taking the video, they seized the phone and for about forty minutes later, one of them Emmanuel Asare, I understand is the prosecutor deleted the videos. He warned he would have smashed the phone. The said police officer initially demanded to format the phone”, he revealed

Per the judicial council directive on the use of cameras and recorders in courtrooms, the directive did not ban filming outside the courtroom after the registrar had given him permission.

The Northern Region GJA is yet to officially issue a statement on the matter but the journalist is praying for justice to be served as the conduct of the personnel amounts to a violation of his rights as a member of the inky fraternity.
