Child Labour is Inimical to Nation's Development

Nyinahin (Ash), Feb 28, GNA- Stakeholders in the nation's development have been asked to step up efforts to curb child labour. Mr. Benjamin Otu, Deputy Ashanti Regional Social Welfare Officer, who made the call, said the practice had, over the years denied children their right to personal development since majority of them spent their precious time and energy engaged in illegal manual work. This, he said, had the tendency to erode the socio-economic gains made by the nation if the problem was not addressed in view of the fact that children were the future leaders and also formed a crucial component of the country's human resource base.

Mr. Otu was speaking at the inauguration of the Atwima-Mponua District Child Labour Protection Committee at a ceremony at Nyinahin on Thursday. The Deputy Regional Social Welfare Officer, entreated the committee to endeavour to protect the welfare and promote the rights of children to ensure their total development. He said they should seriously campaign against all forms of negative socio-cultural practices that discriminated against children so as to tap their God-given talents.
