Chiefs Confab Ends

A five-day conference on Chieftaincy in Africa, organized by the Chieftaincy, Governance and Development Project, has ended in Accra, with a strong recommendation that the chieftaincy institution be assisted to enhance its profile as an integral and viable component of the contemporary socio-political structure of Ghana.

In a communiqu? issued in Accra last Friday, the traditional rulers asked that the institution be adequately resourced from the Consolidated Fund, as enjoyed by other institution bodies.

The traditional rulers further called for the rearrangement of the constitutional order to take account of the crucial role they play in governance.

The communiqu? called on government to see chiefs as a critical and indispensable partner in governance at the local level, namely the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

It called for recognition, proper definition and enhancement of the judicial function of chiefs.

The chiefs further called for the urgent promulgation of a cultural policy for the country.
