Chief remanded for setting 26-year-old man ablaze; deceased's family demand justice

The family of Shaban Abdul Wahab, a driver's mate who was set ablaze to death by some residents of Achiase-Amoam in the Ashanti Region is demanding justice.

The 26-year-old native of Bawku and resident of Asawase was lynched by a mob on suspicion of being an armed robber.

He was attacked and killed on Thursday, 20 June 2019 after Nana Kusi Baabu II, the chief of the community saw him in his palace.

The chief is said to have questioned the deceased and allegedly fired warning shots and shouted that he was an armed robber – unbeknownst to the traditional leader and the residents that the deceased was suffering from hay fever.

His remains were deposited at the Juaben hospital morgue by the Ejisu police.

The police have subsequently arrested the chief and one Akwasi Adu, a suspect in the case.

They were hauled before the Ejisu Magistrate court and have been remanded to reappear on 10 July 2019.

Speaking in an interview, the brother to the deceased, Mohammed Issah, told Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah that they want justice for their bereaved brother since he had never been an armed robber.

Mohammed expressed optimism that justice will prevail, adding that if justice is denied, “something may happen”.
