The Chief Justice Sophia Akufo should have full knowledge of everything within and outside the law so questions fired at her during vetting were worth asking, Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr has stated.
“As a Chief Justice of this country and per our constitution, all cases will have to go before her for adjudication and advice. …cases of abortion, rape and even a carpenter who has failed to discharge a duty well will go before her”, he pointed out.
A section of the public has questioned the type of questions thrown at the new Chief Justice Sophia Akufo during her vetting by the Parliamentary Appointment Committee (PAC) indicating that some of them were out of place.
“She should have general knowledge and at least passing knowledge about everything” the veteran journalist stated on Peace FM morning Show during a panel discussion Tuesday.
According to him, the purposeful interpretation of the law is about the context of the law within the society underscoring the necessity for a judge to know and understand everything in the society.
“Chieftaincy disputes will go before her and she needs to know our traditional system well in order to give fair judgment on the case that is before her. So all questions asked her were not out of place at all”.
Kwasi Pratt Jnr however, expressed optimism in Justice Sophia Akufo to continue the good work of her predecessor, Gorgina Theodora Wood currently member of the Council of State to ensure justice is dispensed fairly.
