Changes at National Service Secretariat

A director of the Ministry of Education, Nana K. C. Appiah-Num has been appointed acting Director of the National Service Scheme. The deputy Director of Operations and Projects, David Kanyi who was acting as Director and the deputy director of administration and finance, Gifty Mahama have been asked to report to the Education Ministry for re-posting. The directives issued by the Minister for Education, Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi also instructed the new acting Director of the Service Scheme to compose a team to finalise the postings of freshly graduated tertiary students.

The former director of the scheme, Dr. Richard Bani was removed from office earlier this year. The changes comes hours after the Secretariat appealed to aggrieved national service personnel who intend to demonstrate against the delay in the payment of their allowances to exercise restraint.

The Public Relations Officer of the National Service Secretariat, Peter Asamoah told JOYFM that the aggrieved service personnel have demanded to be paid their allowances in arrears from November to May this year, as against the Secretariat’s preparedness to pay from January to May this year.

He explained that after a meeting between representatives of the service personnel, the directorate of the secretariat, representatives of the prices and incomes board as well as the Parliamentary select committee on education, service personnel were asked to petition the Ministry of Finance to have their grievances addressed. The secretariat is therefore awaiting a response from the Finance Ministry after it received the petition of the service personnel last Friday.
