"Change notion that the police is corrupt"-Police Official

Keta, March 28, GNA - Mr Johnson Akrofi-Oyirifi, Chief Superintendent of Police in charge of the Keta Division has entreated police personnel to do everything to change the tag on the service as the most corrupt institution in the country.

He said whether that perception was right or wrong, the police everywhere in the country must work hard to raise the service's image. Mr Akrofi-Oyirifi was addressing officers and men of the division at a durbar on Friday to mark the 2009 West Africa Security Services Association (WASSA).

The Division comprises Keta, Anloga, Aflao, Dzodze and Agbozume district commands.

"Personnel need to do a re-examination of all shortcomings on their part and make any lapses a thing of the past, to redeem their own reputation and the image of the service," Mr Akrofi-Oyirifi stated. He added "we should disprove this tag by endeavouring to perform, devoid of attempts to bribery us and also shun unprofessional conduct," he sated.

Mr Akrofi-Oyirifi however commended the personnel for hard work resulting in the reduction of crime, including highway robbery in the area and maintenance of peace, to the admiration of many. He was happy with the efforts government making to tackle the accommodation problem facing the service.

Mr Akrofi-Oyirifi called for the maintenance of the good collaboration between the police and the Judicial Service, Civil Society groups and the various district assemblies.

Mr Sylvester Tornyeava, Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) said government was preparing the police to meet the security challenges the nation would be facing as an oil producing country.
