Carter Made Chief , After Asantehene Snub

Mr James “Chip” Carter, son of former US President, Jimmy Carter has been conferred with the traditional title “Ankobea” by Chiefs and people of Berekuso in the Akuapem South at a Durbar to welcome “The Friendship Force”, an International NGO at Berekuso. Mr Carter led a 27-member delegation of the organisation on a tour to Ghana to acquaint himself with ongoing projects established by the force in various parts of the country.

Conferring the title on Mr Carter, the Chief of Berekuso, Nana Oteng Korankye said the occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter in the native’s stride to forge a more lasting friendship with the United States for the exchanging of ideas in culture and scientific advancement for the benefit of the people.

Nana Korankye said Berekuso was prepared to enter into a twin sister city relationship with any town or city in the US for mutual co-operation. He expressed his gratitude to the Force for agreeing to adopt the Berekuso primary and Junior Secondary Schools which he noted would help bring quality education to the children.

In expressing his appreciation for the honour done him, Mr Carter said his visit was significant as it coincided with the very day his father was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for peace. He added that he was walking in his father’s footsteps to forge friendship and peace towards all people in the world.

He said the Friendship Force believes in helping the poor to better their lives hence the members ignored staying in hotels but chose to stay with the people to learn from them directly. Mr Carter was presented with a Kente cloth and made to sit on a stool to traditionally confer the title on him. Other members of his delegation were also presented with Kente stoles and wooden carvings.

The delegation snubbed by the Asantehene for improper dressing has since left for the US.
