Carl Wilson Floored

Popular television news anchor Gideon Aryeequaye was among the casualties in last Saturday’s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in Accra as he lost his bid to represent the ruling party at newly created Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom constituency.

Controversial Carl Wilson, who was sacked as the chairman of the Confiscated Vehicles Committee, was also floored at the newly created Anyaa-Sowutuom by Chief Executive Officer for National Youth Authority Sedina Tamakloe.

Mr Aryeequaye, Head of News at e-TV Ghana, managed 63 votes as against his main contender, Bright Edem Kojo who polled 112 votes in an election which was supervised by the Electoral Commission and some NDC regional executives.

This is the second time Gideon Aryeequaye attempted to lead the NDC. He lost during his first attempt to represent then Weija Constituency, in the primaries prior to the 2008 Parliamentary elections.

He was beaten by Sherriff Otto-Duodu who lost the eventual contest to incumbent Shirley Ayorkor Botchway in the 2008 parliamentary elections.

Radio Gold and Castle staffer Obuobea Darko-Opoku won the Weija-Gbawe constituency primary with 128 votes, beating her closest contender, Samuel Asamoah, who secured only 46 votes.

She gets the nod to represent the NDC in the newly created constituency in December 7 elections if Parliament passes the controversial 45 newly created constituencies.

The Weija constituency has been split into three; Anyaa-Sowutuom, Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom and Weija-Gbawe constituencies. The elections in the Anyaa-Sowutuom were contested by Sedina Tamakloe, Carl Wilson and Emmanuel Allotey.

At the newly created Ablekuma West constituency seat, Victoria Hamah, a former student leader at the University of Ghana and hostess of Multi TV’s ‘Chocolate Factory’ show, gave a red card to Prince Derick Adjei, a Deputy Coordinator at the National Youth Authority and a certain Diana Twum, a teacher, setting the stage for a face-off with NPP strong woman Ursula Owusu.
