CPP rejects moves to privatise water

THE Convention People’s Party (CPP) has rejected moves by the Kufuor administration to privatise water supply in the country.

The party said “water, being an elixir of life, should not be sold” to the people, majority of whom cannot afford and will, therefore, resort to the drinking of water from rivers and water bodies which are infested with harmful organisms.

The leader of the party, Dr Abubakar Alhassan, was delivering the party’s fraternal greetings to the leadership and delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the NPP’s national delegates congress in Accra, last Saturday.

He said even though the CPP supported the NPP to clinch ultimate victory at the last polls, it would not hesitate to criticise policies that are obnoxious to the economy and the living standards of the people.

“The CPP will always point out developments that have the potential to derail the economy and bring hardships on the broad masses of the people,’ the CPP leader said.

Dr Alhassan, however, remarked that the CPP would also co-operate with the NPP in areas which would bring remarkable transformation in the social and economic life of the people.

He said the CPP and other political parties which helped the NPP to win power are all major stakeholders in the development of the country and would, therefore, lend its support to the government to realise its objective of restructuring the economy.

Dr Alhassan cautioned members of the CPP who have been give positions of responsibility in the Kufuor administration to work hard to justify the confidence of the government.

He commended the Kufuor administration for taking bold measures to improve the economy, such as moves to stabilise the cedi and reduce inflation.

The CPP leader also praised the government for extending a hand of friendship to the country’s neighbours, Togo, Cote d Ivoire and Burkina Faso.

In another fraternal message, the National Treasurer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Mr Ahmed Ramadan, said the party was committed to joining hands with the government to rebuild the nation.

Mr John Amekah, General Secretary of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) , called on the Kufuor administration to tolerate the views of political parties in opposition.

“The GCPP implores the Kufuor administration to take into consideration the views of the minority in the formulation of national policies and programmes,” he said.
