A former Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, has called for a comprehensive inquiry into the controversies surrounding security service recruitment.

He cautioned against personalizing the systemic challenges, arguing that the responsibility for reform extends beyond the current minister, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, to a broader institutional level.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on March 12, 2026, Quartey said the recruitment process for the security agencies often comes with enormous pressure on the supervising minister.

According to him, ministers in charge frequently face demands from various groups, including members of their own political parties who push for the inclusion of preferred candidates in the exercise.

Quartey said his experience has given him insight into how difficult the process can be, both politically and personally.

“I know what it feels like to be in that seat,” he said, noting that controversies surrounding recruitment can easily put the minister under intense scrutiny.

He argued that the challenges currently facing the process should instead be examined within the broader context of how the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is managing the exercise.
