The government’s release of GH¢1.4 billion to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) is expected to provide a significant boost to local governance.
Among other purposes, the funds, which represent the second quarter allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), are intended to enhance the planning, implementation, and monitoring of development projects at the local level.
Additionally, the increased allocation also provides MMDAs with greater capacity to respond to the needs of citizens.
This was contained in a statement by the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA), which has commended the government’s action.
In its statement, it described the move as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to strengthening the decentralisation process and empowering local authorities to effectively deliver on their mandates.
“Timely and adequate resource allocation is central to deepening local governance and ensuring that the assemblies are better placed to provide critical services in education, health, sanitation, infrastructure, and other areas of community development,” the statement stressed.
Meanwhile, the CLGA has called on all MMDAs to make judicious use of the funds and ensure accountability and transparency in their expenditure.
This, the centre noted, will build trust between the assemblies and the citizens they serve, while also reinforcing the government’s efforts in strengthening local governance.
