The Appointments Committee of Parliament has, by a majority decision, recommended the Chief Justice nominee, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, for approval by Parliament as the next Chief Justice.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, November 13, 2025, the Chairman of the Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, stated that Baffoe-Bonnie demonstrated exceptional knowledge of the law during his vetting.

He commended the nominee’s competence, grasp of judicial ethics, and ability to address questions with professionalism, clarity, and intellectual rigour, affirming that he possesses the necessary qualifications for the role.

“The nominee demonstrated outstanding competence, deep knowledge of the law and a firm grasp of the judicial ethics. He addressed questions posed by the committee with professionalism, clarity and intellectual rigour. The nominee possesses the requisites of qualification," he noted.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie appeared before the Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025.

The vetting process began amid controversy when Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin referred to him as a “disputed nominee,” raising concerns about the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, however, objected to the characterisation, insisting that there was no dispute regarding the nominee.
