Bukom Banku supports Bukom Square Project

Accra, March 17, GNA - The Bukom Square Regeneration Project, aimed at wealth creation and boosting tourism has now started, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Minister of Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City, told the GNA on Friday.

"The Bukom Project is now on course, the youth in the community have agreed that the project should go on, Bukom Banku is now my very good friend," the Minister said.

He said the Project, which had faced a lot of obstacles since last year because the youth in the community would not agree to the Project is now on-going.

"The youth in the area now understand the benefits that the Project is likely to bring," Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey said.

The Minister said people in the community would be involved in the Project to ensure proper management while it gave employment to them. Earlier it was alleged that Bukom Banku, the famous boxer in the area, was among the people who stopped the work.

According to the contractor, Mr Philip Amankwaah Yeboah of Philiyanco and Company Limited, some of the boxers in the area always fought with his men while working, so the Project had to be halted for some time. Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey said Bukom Banku's involvement in the Project had helped

The Minister said his Sector was ready to support any movement aimed at reuniting the people, adding that if the people supported the Project it would become a model for other developing countries. He appealed to the chiefs and people of the community to support the project.

He said Ga Mashie was full of history and it was important that tourists shared the rich history.

The five million-dollar Bukom Square Regeneration Project would seek to regenerate the Bukom Square, by building a Hall of Fame where all renowned boxers from Bukom would have their profiles. The Ministry would also rehabilitate the public toilet at Bukom and source loans for a big deep freezer for coconut sellers.
