Bui Dam authorities begin negotiations with workers

Authorities supervising the construction of the Bui Dam have begun negotiations with agitating workers over their severance package following a series of demonstrations on the site.

Hundreds of the artisans employed by lead contractor Sinohydro are being laid off but the workers are complaining the redundancy package presented by the company is not good enough.

Artisans and other field workers undertaking the construction of the Bui Dam are being laid off by Sinohydro because the project is nearly completed.

Speaking to Citi News, Assistant External Relations Officer of the BPA; Mawuli Fui Kwajovia said: “I wouldn’t want to delve into figures now because Sinohydro is looking at the issue and we only hope for a possible deal with the issue and I think the issue will be resolved very soon. Petitions are still ongoing but Sinohydro is doing everything possible to meet and talk to them”.

He further stated, “The other aspects of the project is however still ongoing when you visit the transmission yard or the switch yard. Work on the scuttle Dam two has just been finished”.

“We are the employer’s representatives. We represent government in the project. Our main contractor is Sinohydro and they are responsible for the workers; however BPA is ensuring that Sinohydro deals with the issue so that concerns of workers are addressed,” Mr. Kwajovia added.
