A British man, Daniel Forrester, is set to walk from Romford, England, to Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region carrying the ashes of his late partner Caroline Sarpong, to fulfil the last promise he made to her and also raise money for the hospice that cared for her.
Forrester, 47, and Caroline were together for nearly two years and engaged for 11 months before she passed away on November 11 last year.
Sarpong, who had previously been married, battled colorectal cancer that spread to her liver, lymph nodes, and lungs, and was later diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour.
In a video he shared on social media, Forrester invited followers to join him on his journey.
“Follow me as I walk from London to Ghana,” he said. He explained how he began walking a few days after Caroline’s funeral as a way to cope with grief, gradually building his stamina from six miles to long training walks of up to 60 miles on weekends.

“For a couple of days after the funeral, I was in a dark place, sitting on the sofa, crying my eyes out. A book came in the post about long-distance walking, and I thought, I’m getting out there, I’m walking today. That day I walked six miles to my mum’s house, and that was it. It started me on this journey,” he said.
Forrester admitted that he initially struggled with social media.
Why an 81-year-old British citizen has been stranded in Ghana for months
“Posted my first video two days ago and already got 700 followers. Some of the comments you guys have left me have been absolutely amazing. Does wonders for my morale, believe me", he noted.
He said he had originally planned to start his walk on September 20, 2025, but a foot injury in May delayed his departure.
“I damaged the ligaments in my foot, which put me back seven weeks. So now I’m leaving on November 6, the day Caroline was admitted to the hospice,” he said.
Although his final itinerary has not been confirmed, his route will take him from Romford to Canterbury, with a boat trip from Barking Riverside to Woolwich, continuing to Dover to catch a ferry to Calais.
From there, he will walk through France, Spain, and Gibraltar, take a ferry to Morocco, and continue across the Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast before reaching Kumasi in Ghana, retracing places Caroline loved and the route the couple often took on date nights.
