Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga and member of Parliament’s Committee on Education, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has intensified calls for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools to address what he describes as worsening indiscipline among students.

In a citinewsroom.com report on August 20, 2025, Alamzy argued that abolishing corporal punishment was a mistake, stressing that Ghana needs practical, homegrown solutions to curb misconduct in schools.

“I think we should establish clear policies to solve indiscipline in schools. We have to go back to corporal punishment. We always copy wrongly. When we wanted to cancel it, we were citing America and other countries, but America has gone back. So, we need to go back. We shouldn’t have even left this kind of punishment in the first place,” he stated.

The legislator maintained that not every foreign practice suit Ghana’s context, adding that when properly regulated, corporal punishment can serve as a deterrent against bullying, harassment, and other disruptive behaviours becoming prevalent in schools.

His remarks follow a surge in violent incidents in senior high schools.

A recent viral video showed a student at Accra Academy Senior High School flogging two of his peers with a cutlass, sparking outrage and reigniting debate over discipline and character formation in educational institutions.

In a separate incident at Kinbu Senior High School in Accra, a student, Addib Alhassan, was fatally stabbed by a colleague during an altercation on campus.

He was rushed to the Adabraka Polyclinic and later referred to Ridge Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Alamzy has therefore called for stronger preventive measures, including random searches in schools and tighter enforcement of disciplinary policies.

“We must educate our students not to be involved in bullying or harassment. We also have to make sure there is clear security in our schools to protect students,” he indicated.
