The United States Embassy in Ghana has cautioned individuals, particularly visa holders, against breaking or violating the country's laws.
According to them, any acts committed by visa holders that violate the laws of the country could have serious consequences and could jeopardise their future opportunities.
In a Facebook post on Monday, June 23, 2025, the US Embassy in Ghana disclosed that offenders could have their visas revoked, face deportation, or lose eligibility to apply for or hold US visas in the future, advising holders to respect the rules that come with their visas.
“Breaking US laws can have serious consequences for your visa. If you are arrested or violate any laws, your visa may be revoked, you may be deported, and you could be ineligible for future US visas. Follow the rules and don’t jeopardize your travel. A US visa is a privilege, not a right,” the post read.
The advisory comes amid strict enforcement on immigrant visa applicants by the state authorities.
On June 19, 2025, the US State Department told embassies and consulates they must vet student visa applicants for “hostile attitudes towards our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles” but said they should resume appointments that were paused in late May.
According to CNN, vetting will look at student and exchange visa applicants’ “entire online presence.”
Applicants will be asked to set their social media profiles to public as part of the new vetting, and the cable notes that “limited access to, or visibility of, online presence could be construed as an effort to evade or hide certain activity.”
It comes as the Trump administration has taken significant actions that are likely to deter international students from coming to the US. It has aggressively revoked student visas and specifically targeted Harvard University.
