GHANA’S amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, beat a select Greater Accra team 7-1 at the Accra Stadium last Thursday in a tune- up exercise.
An eighth victory for the Bombers was won on a ‘silver platter’ when Greater Accra’s Samuel Akadede failed to turn up for a fight with Lante Addy in the flyweight category.
The bombers, who are preparing for the S. C. S. A. Zone II championship in Niamey, Niger, from March 10 and 16, charged at their respective opponents with full force and won the visibly tough fights with convincing results.
Bombers’ Wonder Boy, Joseph Martey, began the show for the national team when he posted a 5-0 defeat over fellow flyweight Isaac Larbi.
But Michael Barnor’s display erased any hopes of a clean sweep for the Bombers when he was lashed 4-1 by Greater Accra’s Herbert Quartey in their bantamweight bout.
Lightweights Fuseini Assandoh and hard punching and medal hopeful, Thomas Aryeetey, however, restored hope for the Bombers with 4-1 victories each over Greater Accra’s Kassim Abubakari and Henry Mensah respectively.
The trend persisted, with further victories by Godwin Cudjoe, Thomas Awimbono, Paa Kwasi Ankrah and Lartie Lartey in splendid fashion for the Bombers.
Fighting in the light-middleweight division, Mutala Mohammed of Greater Accra was saved by his corner in the third round of his fight against Godwin Cudjoe.
Both Thomas Awimbono and Paa Kwasi Ankrah won their respective middleweight and heavyweight bouts with second round technical knockouts over Nii Darko Dodoo and Sylvester Tsagli.
But when Lartei Lartey mounted the ring, the crowd had already passed judgement on his opponent, Edwards Tetteh, whose ability to maintain consciousness till the end earned him respect, although he lost 4-1.
Ten other fights, involving members of the same sides, heightened excitement among the large crowd. The Bombers won a narrow 5-4 over the Greater Accra side a fortnight ago.
