Body of drowned fisherman retrieved

Apam (C/R) Sept. 8 GNA - The body of a 64-year old fisherman, Kofi Sepah who got drowned at sea last Monday at Mumford near Apam, was on Sunday found washed ashore at the beach between Mumford and Apam.

Opanyin Sepah was among 10 other fishermen whose canoe was capsized on Monday by high tidal waves when returning from a fishing expedition. A spokesman for the Apam police, briefing the Ghana News Agency at Apam on Sunday, said a team of medical Officers and police officers from Apam who examined the body, directed that it must be buried immediately due to its bad state.

The spokesman said as a result it was handed over to the family, who have since buried it, suspecting no foul play.

Meanwhile fishermen and fishmongers at Mumford have renewed their appeal to the government to fulfil its promise to build a safe landing site at Mumford, to prevent fishermen from getting drowned at sea and the destruction of their fishing gears.

According to the fishermen, there is about 250 canoes at Mumford but majority of them have migrated to the other parts of the Central Region and Western Region because of difficulties in landing at the town.
