Boakye-Gyan is working with govt - Smith

The personal assistant of former President Rawlings, Victor Smith has described the call by Major Boakye Djan for the trial of Mr. Rawlings as a calculated plan with government to hound the former President.

He was reacting to Major Boakye Djan’s statements to the National Reconciliation Commission on Tuesday. The Major apologised to people who suffered under the AFRC regime and demanded that the former President be made to account for the killings during the PNDC era.

But Mr. Smith told JOY FM that Major Boakye Djan’s statements seemed to have been well planned to coincide with the NRC’s plans to subpoena the former President. “I don’t think it is a coincidence, I’m beginning to suspect that there is an agenda from this government working through the NRC to get President Rawlings by whatever means, this is how I see it. I see that sort of thing being worked out”, Mr Smith noted.

The former President’s office is also awaiting government’s reaction on Boakye Djan’s suggestion that Mr. Rawlings be hauled before the International War Crimes Tribunal if he refused to accept responsibility for the atrocities.

“I still smell a rat. I smell a rat in the sense that the government is in cohort with this call from Major Boakye Djan and I will not be surprised if such a thing starts happening, but we are waiting to see the day that government will make its move”, Mr Smith added.
