Boakye-Djan justifies the June 4 Uprising

Accra, Aug. 29, GNA- Regrettable as the June 4 Uprising might be, it was an unavoidable event to uphold the law against those who have broken it, a senior member of the defunct Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) said on Friday.

"It is not fair to expect us to show remorse or regret to people who have deprived us of our legitimate right," Major Kojo Boakye-Djan, former Deputy Chairman of the AFRC told newsmen in Accra during a pre-departure press conference.

"We may have made some unavoidable mistakes but as at now, we don't know. I therefore challenge anybody who has any case against us to go to the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) or forever shut-up." Major Boakye-Djan said he was in the country after 22 years in exile to assist his sister and family in the hearing process of their petition to the NRC regarding the execution of his brother Kyeremah Djan for a failed coup attempt.

He said members of the AFRC were ready to appear before the Commission to defend any action that might be challenged. "So far no case has been levelled against any of us even though the AFRC has been mentioned in a few cases.

"If people who have been accusing AFRC members over the years fail to avail themselves of the opportunity now, then it will be wrong for any one to accuse us later. If they do, then we will advise ourselves."

On the executions of the former heads of state and top Army officers, Major Boakye-Djan again said they committed a treasonable crime and were executed based on the Criminal Code of 1960. There was no personal reason for their executions, he said, adding that the AFRC just upheld the laws against the officers. "If any body thinks otherwise let him go to NRC."

Major Boakye-Djan who leaves Accra on Saturday said he would return later to take up again the practice of journalism.

"I shall be joining you soon as a publisher of a weekly news feature magazine, he said.
