The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the value of the cedi and keeping inflation under control, even as rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions pose risks to Ghana’s economic recovery.
Dr Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana said the central bank would remain cautious in its policy decisions despite recent improvements in key economic indicators, warning that global developments could still pressure domestic prices and the local currency.
“The progress we have made is encouraging, but we must not become complacent,” he stated.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Dr Asiama stressed that maintaining macroeconomic stability is critical to creating an environment where businesses can confidently plan, invest, and expand.
“That is why the Bank of Ghana will continue to take decisions that protect the value of the cedi, keep inflation low, preserve financial stability and support sustainable economic growth,” he noted.
He pointed to the Bank’s current 14% policy rate as providing sufficient room to contain inflation while supporting investment and business growth.
The BoG, he added, will continue to monitor developments closely and adjust its approach where necessary to safeguard economic gains.

Dr Asiama assured stakeholders that the central bank would maintain an orderly foreign exchange market, amid concerns over external pressures that could affect the stability of the cedi.
The engagement brought together representatives from the business community, banking sector, industry associations, traders, and microfinance institutions.
He further reiterated his commitment to transparency and openness, saying the Bank’s goal is to build confidence among businesses, investors, and households.
“Our goal is simple – to create an economic environment where businesses can grow with confidence, households can plan for the future, and every Ghanaian can share in the benefits of a stable and growing economy,” he said.
