New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Kevin Taylor has stated asked that Ghanaians blame the NPP government and, especially Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful for the recent hike in the cost of data.

The fierce critic of the NPP accused the government of causing the increase through the taxes it has introduced especially the recent increase in the Communications Service Tax( CST) by 50%.

“I want to make this clear to my fellow Ghanaians that they should blame this current government and especially this slay queen (Ursula Owusu-Ekuful) for the high cost of data today in Ghana because this is a criminal enterprise that is confused, ignorant and very deceitful when it comes to taxing of its citizens,” he said on his video broadcast on social media titled With All Due Respect.

He also accused the government of lacking ideas on how to lessen the tax burden of Ghanaians, insisting that it is no fault of the telecommunications companies that there have been increases in the cost of data.

Implementation of the increased CST has caused some disagreements between the telecommunications companies and government.

The telecommunications companies which implemented an upfront deduction of the tax was directed by to revert to a back-end model of deducting the tax.

But the back-end deductions came with changes in the cost of data provoking an outcry among consumers. A #SaveOurData social media campaign was launched and seem to be producing results.

Meanwhile, MTN, one of the telecommunications companies, has apologized for challenges with data subscription upon the implementation of the back-end CST deductions. Even so government has sanctioned the company for some breaches.
