Blame past and present government for UEW closure - NUGS

The leadership of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), has blamed government for the closure of all the campuses of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) nationwide following a High Court injunction.

“I will lay the blame on the doorstep of both the present and past government. The Ministry of Education should have known better to prevent this unforeseen development” local NUGS president, University of Education-Kumasi (UEW-K) , Solomon Cudjo exclusively told mynewsgh.com

“I will not blame the Court neither the plaintiff, maybe they are all seeking proper steps to be followed in constituting the University Council” he observed in an interview on Wednesday morning. According to him, the writings were clear on the wall that the matter could lead to such unfortunate incident that has led students to vacate campuses.

The Winneba High Court on Tuesday June 13, 2017 granted injunction by an Assemblyman Kofi Kwayere who is challenging the authority and constitution of the University Council.

The plaintiff’s lawyer and the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markins has come under verbal attacks after the court upheld their pleas leading to the shutdown of the institution until the substantive matter is heard on Friday June 16, 2017.

“Some people are blaming the plaintiff and his lawyer but I will not do that. I will blame those who did not follow the right procedures but as a result led to this” Solomon Cudjo stated.

Meanwhile, our reporter Kwabena Danso-Dapaah visited the Kumasi Campus of the University and reported that students have since vacated their hostelst following directive by the University’s authorities.
