‘Blame NPP For Doctors’ Strike’

Reveals Dr. Sekyi-Obuobi

Monitoring Desk Report

Against the scenery of ugly noises distilled into barrage of attacks on government by the struggling opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Mr. Williams Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his ilk, in a huge controversy as generated by the nationwide strike embarked on by doctors, Dr. Sekyi-Obuobi has finally spilt the beans, as he tries to do justice to the myth surrounding the rampant strike actions by the nation’s doctors.

Responding to a question posed him by Asempa FM’s Nana Bobie Ansah through a telephone conversation on Saturday 15th October, 2011, on the widely listened-to “kukurantumi” programme, as to whether who really should be blamed for the current state of affairs leading to doctors’ strike, Dr. K. Sekyi-Obuobi without mincing his words indicates that, if any regime in this country must be held responsible for the impasse bothering the health sector, it certainly must be the NPP.
According to him, even though some challenges existed during the first NDC regime, strike actions, as it has become rampant of doctors today wasn’t common; in that, doctors were paid Extra Duty Allowance until John Kufuor and his NPP government came on to the scene in 2001 to cancel the provision made for them by the first NDC regime.
Speaking from his Germany base, Dr. Sekyi-Obuobi expressed worry and dissatisfaction about the extent to which monies to be paid have degenerated into such huge controversy; but stated categorically, that, NPP must be blamed for the woes of doctors because of the unwise decision that they took to cancel the Extra Duty Allowance paid them until that party came into office.
Dr. Obuobi, recounted how he was nearly folded in to jail when he questioned the delay of a ‘standby generator’ claimed to have been procured by the NPP government for the Ridge Hospital to help solve the then rampant power failures during his days at the Ridge Hospital, saying, it has been a taboo to talk about this ‘standby generator’.
Now that Dr. Sekyi-Obuobi has set the records straight, The Informer believes Akufo-Addo and his NPP will have reflected on their past action and with immediate effect put a stop to their clandestine activities of inciting the doctors against President Mills and his government.

Therefore, if the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and particularly doctors who have offered themselves for manipulations by the NPP are listening to discerning minds, especially, the latest revelations by their own colleague, Dr. Sekyi-Obuobi, they should revise their decision, and get back to the negotiating table and stop blaming President Atta Mills and his government, now that the facts have been laid bare.
