Black Wednesday: Profiles of Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye and Alhaji Limuna Muniru

A devastating helicopter crash at Adansi Sikaman claimed the lives of eight people, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Ashanti Region as the officials were on their way to an event at Obuasi.

The names of the perished are: Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Limuna Muniru, Ag Dep National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Samuel Aboagye, NADMO Deputy Director-General.

Also confirmed are the deaths of 3 Airforce officers, namely Squadron Leader Peter Anala (the pilot); Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Below is a profile of some of the deceased victims.

Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru

He was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama as the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Human Security.

During President John Dramani Mahama’s first term, he served in several key positions, including Northern Regional Minister, Upper East Regional Minister, Minister of Food and Agriculture, and Minister of State in charge of the Human Resources Department and Scholarships at the Presidency, roles he held between 2012 and 2017.

Born in Damongo Langbonto in the Savannah Region, Alhaji Muniru began his Junior High School (JHS) education at the Vitting Experimental JHS from 1977 to 1980, after his primary education at the United Primary School from 1972 to 1977, both in Tamale.

He attended the Damongo Secondary School, Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, for his GCE Ordinary Level from 1980 to 1984, and the Tamale Secondary School in Tamale from 1986 to 1988 for his GCE Advanced Level.

Furthering his education at a higher level, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Ghana, a post-graduate Diploma in Health Policy, Planning and Financing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a Master of Science degree in Health Policy, Planning and Financing at the University of London, UK (LSE).

He served in many roles.

Samuel Sarpong

He served as a former Ashanti Regional Minister between 2013 to 2015 and as a Central Regional Minister between 2013 to 2014.

He attended Osei Tutu Senior High School and later continued to Wesley College in Kumasi, where he completed a three-year teacher training program.

He was married.

Samuel Aboagye

Before his demise, he was a parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East in 2024 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) where he was defeated by his opponent.

He secured an appointment as the Deputy Director General in Charge of Relief and Protocol at NADMO.
