Black Wednesday: Profile of the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was confirmed dead in a fatal helicopter crash at Adansi Sikaman in the Adansi Asokwa District of the Ashanti Region, along with seven others, while en route to an event in Obuasi.

He was appointed as the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology by President John Dramani Mahama in January 2025, assuming office in February 2025 after being vetted and approved by Parliament and subsequently sworn in.

He also served as the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and the Nanton constituencies respectively.

In December 2024, he won the parliamentary election on the ticket of the NDC to represent Tamale Central by securing 52,263 votes while his opponent had 16,647 votes. He retained the seat as MP for Tamale Central.

He served in government roles including Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations.


For his educational background, Dr Mohammed attended Ghana Senior High School in Tamale for his secondary education, and later pursued his tertiary education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he earned a Master of Science in Development Planning in 2008.

His academic journey also included studies at the University of Ghana and Mountcrest University, culminating in a PhD in 2020. His time at KNUST shaped his commitment to sustainable development and evidence-based policymaking, values he carried into public service.

He also served on key parliamentary committees, including Public Accounts and Trade, Industry and Tourism.

He was married with kids.
