Bimbilla Bye-Election Today

The Bimbilla electorate goes to the poll today, to elect a new nember of Parliament, for this Northern Region constituency. Polls close at 8pm and the result is expected at 10pm local time.
The six candidates contesting the bye-election are Messrs Mohammed Ibn Abass(NDC); Dominic Nitiwul (NPP); Abdulai Yusif (GCPP); Ibn Aziz Abass (DPP); Andrew Ngoma (PNC) and Iddi Aziz (Independent candidate).
The seat became vacant, following the resignation of Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas on February 15 to assume the responsibility of Executive Secretary of ECOWAS.

The polls are significant in the sense that it is the first time since the landmark 2000 parliamentary elections that a seat has been declared vacant for a by-election. It is also the first time that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is contesting a by-election as a ruling party and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the largest opposition entity since the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

The male dominance in the political, economic and social spheres and activities of the society also manifested in the filing of nominations since no party put up a female candidate.

Candidates of five political parties, namely the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), and an independent candidate are vying
