A 19-year-old road construction worker, identified as Moses Akwetey, popularly known as Mosey, has died after an excavator reportedly ran over parts of his body at a construction site along the Wenchi-Awisa road in the Bono Region.

Moses, who hailed from Accra and worked as a steel bender for one of the contractors on the Wenchi-Bamboi highway project under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme, reportedly suffered fatal injuries during work on the road on the morning of the incident.

According to an account from a fellow worker, Moses had accompanied colleagues to collect some items using an excavator. He was reportedly sitting beside the machine when he fell, and its chain subsequently passed over his hand and leg.

The injured worker was rushed to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead, according to the account provided by the workers.

Following the incident, the foreman supervising the work reportedly ordered workers to stop work for the morning as colleagues grappled with the loss of their co-worker.

The family of the deceased has also been contacted and informed of the tragedy, with relatives reportedly arriving following the notification.

However, details surrounding the exact circumstances of the incident remain limited. It is not yet clear whether the incident has been formally reported to the police or whether an official investigation has been launched.

The contractor involved, the project authorities and the relevant safety agencies are yet to provide an official account of the incident in the information available for this report.
