Bawumia's Wife Cleans Market For Votes as...

Husband Pounds Fufu up North

The group of market women named Coalition of Market Women who last week warned politicians with the penchant for being the first at gutted market scenes, have achieved some success as one of the culprit, has changed her strategy days after the statement was issued.

The group issued the warning in a press release jointly signed by Mary Aframea and Daavi Emelia Adzo, and three days later, Samira Bawumia, wife of Nana Akufo-Addo’s running mate, Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, was seen in the Nima Market in Accra, but this time, busily sweeping with some party folks apparently for New Patriotic Party (NPP) for some votes.

Rebecca Akufo-Addo wife of NPP flag bearer, was not part of the sweeping exercise, as she was nowhere near the market. However, a certain lady, who only gave her name as Hajia, questioned why the two women will be visiting and sweeping markets now. According to her, even though they both live not too far from the Nima market, they have never bought even tomatoes from the market before.

Indeed, Rebecca lives opposite the Nima Police station while Samira, lives in Kanda Estate, a stone throw from Nima. Samira used last Saturday’s exercise to campaign for the NPP and why its flagbearer should be voted for by the Zongo communities in particularly, as their next president.

This comes days after her husband was also spotted pounding fufu in some markets in the Nadowli East Constituency in the Upper West Region.

Interestingly, Mrs. Bawumia, failed to notice those sections of the market that were really dirty but was rather seen with her entourage, sweeping the already cleaned side of the market, after which they went round waving and acknowledging cheers.

Rebecca and Simira, who are gunning to become first and second ladies, respectively, have in recent times been seen at gutted market scenes, pretending to be sympathizing with the victims of the fire outbreaks.

Their prompt visits have left many questioning whether somebody was deliberately burning the markets to help score some cheap political points.

The group had questioned whether, Mrs. Akufo-Addo was the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator for always being the first to be at the scenes of markets razed down by fire, pretending to be sympathizing with the victims of the disasters.

The market women warned politicians who have sought to take advantage of their misfortune to put a stop to the practice invariably to score cheap political points.

According to the market women, they had observed with much worry and disappointment the political gimmick being played by some NPP politicians, in the run-up to the December elections to exploit public sympathy relative to these unexplained fire outbreaks, by being the first at these disaster scenes.According to them these politicians could be behind these disasters

‘’We have the cause to believe that some politicians, who are quick to arrive at such scenes, under the guise of sympathizing with the victims are often the prime suspects behind these heinous and dastardly crime’’ the statement said.

The statement further said some few days ago, there was a fire outbreak at the Mallam market in Accra and to the amazement of many, the NPP immediately organized for Mrs. Akufo-Addo and Mrs. Bawumia, to be the first to visit the scene, obviously to score political points.

The statement said they had gathered information that Mrs. Akufo-Addo was preparing to come and visit some parts of the Madina Market that got burnt on Tuesday October 23, 2012.

The Coalition of Market Women said they wished wish to place on record that this tragedy had brought much sorrow to all market women, and for that matter any attempt by politicians to make political capital out of these outbreaks would amount to insensitivity to the plight of women.
