Bawku West elects first female Presiding Member

The Bawku West District Assembly in the Upper East Region, has elected a 48 year old woman, Madam Damata Bukari as the first female Presiding Member (PM).

Madam Bukari, a nurse administrator at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, who is a government appointee to the Assembly.

The new PM polled 34 votes out of 50 valid votes cast representing 66 per cent whilst her opponent, Mr Moses Adukpam, also a government appointee, had 16 votes representing 34 per cent.

Madam Bukari, thanked members of the assembly for the overwhelming support and urged members to put their differences aside and work for the interest of Bawku West.

Mr David Nar-rel, District Coordinating Director, in a speech before the vote appealed to the assembly members to consider the interest of the District not to delay in electing a PM, since it could cost the Assembly dearly.
