Bawku Tensions: 'Have you gone on sabbatical since NPP's exit?' – NPP MP asks GNAT, NAGRAT

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has slammed the leadership of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for what he described as their apparent silence over the recent killings of students in Bawku and Nelerigu.

The lawmaker called out the teacher unions, questioning their failure to address the issue with the seriousness and urgency it demands.

According to him, he is surprised at how these educational unions, once highly vocal during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, have seemingly gone silent under the current NDC government.

“Where is the leadership of NAGRAT and GNAT? Have they ceased to exist or they are done with their hatchet job against the NPP administration and since they are no more in power, they have taken a sabbatical leave.

“Are these two bodies telling Ghanaians that they haven’t heard about the sacred killings of three innocent SHS students at Bawku and Nelerigu SHS by some unknown gunmen?” he queried in a Facebook post on July 27, 2025.

Nyarko Osei termed the killings as “barbarism,” expressing disbelief and outrage over how unknown gunmen gained access to the premises of Bawku and Nalerigu Senior High Schools and took the lives of the students.

He called for swift action from the unions on the development, highlighting the need for decisive actions.

“This is the first time in history I’m hearing of such barbarism where gunmen can enter into the dormitories in our secondary schools and gun down innocent kids just like that and there’s no single word coming from either NAGRAT or GNAT,” he said.
