President John Dramani Mahama has attributed the escalation of conflict in Bawku to deliberate attempts by individuals seeking to derail the progress being made by the government through the Asantehene’s mediation efforts.

Condemning the rising tension in Bawku and its surrounding areas, the President said that based on the briefings he has received from the Asantehene regarding the mediation talks, he is confident that peace will soon be restored.

“We have given the mediation efforts to Otumfuo and he had briefed me constantly on the progress that he has been making and we are almost there. So, the current fighting and killings can only be done by people who want to derail the mediation efforts. Let's give peace a chance,” Mahama said when the Overlord of Gonjaland, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura BII-Kunutu Jewu Soale I, paid a courtesy call on him, in Accra on July 29, 2025.

The President also raised concerns about how the ongoing violence has disrupted education and crippled public services.

Sharing his thoughts on violent killing of some students amid the conflict, he described the situation as unacceptable.

He lamented how students pursuing their academic goals have been tragically killed as a result of the conflict, while public servants are fleeing the town for fear of losing their lives.

“Your Majesty, there can be no progress without peace, and I wish to commend you for the peace that reigns in Gonja land. It is my wish that other areas will learn from the peace that Gonja enjoys. So, I take this occasion to appeal to our brothers and sisters Kusasis and Mamprusis to give peace a chance.

“We cannot accept this current situation where students are shot in school and killed. We can't accept the current situation where teachers, public officers have all run away from Bawku because they are afraid for their lives,” he added.

President Mahama called for an end to the conflict and appealed to all factions to allow peace to prevail in the interest of national development.
