The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is scheduled to meet with members of the Kusang Traditional Council (traditional leaders of the Kusasis) today, Monday, June 30, 2025.
This meeting is a continuation of the Asantehene's ongoing efforts to mediate the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
A statement released on June 29, 2025, by the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Asantehene, emphasised that the meeting is an integral part of the Asantehene's mediation initiative.
It also urged all parties involved in the conflict to cooperate fully with the peace efforts.
“His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, will meet with the Kusang Traditional Council on Monday, 30th June, 2025. Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku,” the statement read.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II began his mediation efforts in 2023, actively engaging key stakeholders from both the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities to resolve the chieftaincy dispute at the core of the conflict.
He has consistently reiterated his commitment to restoring enduring peace in Bawku and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.
The conflicting Kusasi and Mamprusi factions previously met with the Asantehene for peace negotiations between April 28 and April 30, 2025, after which talks were briefly paused.
The mediation process was set to resume, as stated by Otumfuo during a meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace with the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Analysts have highlighted that the conflict in Bawku, a border town, is becoming increasingly susceptible to spillover effects from regional insecurity in Burkina Faso.
