Correspondence from Volta Region

The bank of Keta Lagoon Complex which is located in Abutiakope Electoral Area of the Keta Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region has been hit with an illegal encroachment by a developer.

The site has already been cleared with two security posts almost completed and trenches dug for the building of a fence wall around the site before the main building project commences.

Hon. Promise Kofi Baccah, the Assembly Member for the Electoral Area where the illegal activity is taking place revealed to GhanaWeb Volta Regional correspondent that the developer is yet to meet with the Municipal Authorities as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials for possible issuance of either a ‘go-ahead’ order or otherwise.

Mr. Baccah, however, failed to name the developer but was quick to add that he is currently not in the country.

The Assembly Member further added that he was served with the project document some time ago by the developer and got to know that the project to be undertaken, is a general purposed recreational ground which when completed will attract a lot of people from all walks of life.

The development is of great concern to residents whose properties are not far from the site as they say it will block the waterway during times of heavy downpours. When this happens, the water will force its way into homes nearby and displacement of many residents around the area is what the outcome could be.

Two residents who spoke to GhanaWeb correspondent accused the Municipal Authorities of doing absolutely nothing to stop the illegal activity of the developer. One of them said; they [residents] will think of stopping the developer themselves if the authorities fail to act.
