Bank Officials arrested for fake currencies

Two account officers of Bawjiase Area Rural Bank have been arrested by the Agona Swedru police for allegedly using fake currency notes to pay customers.

They are Mutaru Ali and Maxwell Addae.

Mr John Ackon, Deputy Superintendent of Police, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the two suspects collected some money from the Nyakrom branch of the Bank of Ghana to pay customers who had applied for loans.

He said the two suspects were given 40 million cedis on April 28, to be disbursed to Poverty Alleviation Fund (PAF) applicants in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District.

Mr Ackom said the applicants, after receiving the money, detected that the amount given to them included fake 5,000 cedis notes.

He said that the recipients who were all women detected that 680,000 cedis out of the 40 million cedis they received from the two bank officials were fake notes.

Mr Ackom said Ali and Addae appeared before the Agona Swedru Circuit Court on Thursday and were each granted 20 million cedis bail to be justified.

They would re-appear on June 20.
