The ban on noisemaking in the capital, Accra, begins today, Monday 14 May.

As a result, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has asked all churches, mosques and other religious bodies to desist from making noise.

A statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, dated Thursday, 10 May, said: “The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) wishes to inform all residents in its jurisdiction that this year’s ban on drumming and noisemaking commences from 14 May to 14 June 2018.

“It has, therefore, set the following guideline in the interest of peace, harmony and national security; during the period of the ban, the usual form of worship should be confined to the premises of churches/mosques and noise levels minimized to the barest limit possible.

“The positioning of loudspeakers outside the premises of churches, mosques, and pubs are banned. Roadside evangelists are to cease their activities during this period.”

The ban precedes the annual Homowo festival.
