Ban of mobile phones in SHS still in force

Agona Swedru, June 13, GNA - Mr Emmanuel K T Osam, headmaster of the Swedru Senior High School, on Friday said the school would not tolerate the use of mobile phones by students because the ban on their usage was still in force.

He, therefore, advised parents to desist from the practice of buying mobile phones for their children in schools and noted that the rules and regulations of the Ghana Education Service (GES) do not allow mobile phone usage in first and second cycle schools.

Mr Osam, who said this at the Annual General Meeting of the School's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Agona Swedru, noted that students spent several hours on phones during the night in making calls popularly known as "Anadwe ye dew" (meaning night sweet) in their dormitories. He noted that, such habits disrupted their studies and made them to doze whilst in class during lessons in day time.

Mr Osam said the situation had compelled authorities of the school to seize numerous mobiles phones from the students who used them and added: "the more you seize, the more students bring them.

"This has become a great source of worry to the school." Mr Osam said the school authorities were worried about the excessive manner in which students ate candies on campus and appealed to parents to caution them.

On the payment of fees, he appealed to parents to pay regularly since the school was going through financial difficulties, which has compelled it to review the menu for the students.

Commodore Albert Bentil-Addison, Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association said the PTA would soon in March next year complete and handover a new classroom block it was building. He called on the parents to constantly advice their children to desist from acts that would impede their studies to enable become good citizens in future.
