Baby Ocansey's surety jailed for deceit

A mechanic was jailed for six months with hard labour by the Osu Community Tribunal on Thursday for lying that he owns properties needed to stand surety to bail Amina B. Abubakari-Sidiq, alias Baby Ocansey.

Samuel Annan had told the Regional Tribunal presided over by Justice Isaac Dousey that he owns a 30-bedroom three-storey building at Teshie-Nungua Estate and a 4,000-bird poultry farm at Oyarifa with an annual income of 750 million cedis.

However, this was proved to be false by the BNI during their investigations. Baby Ocansey is standing trial with two officials of the bank of Ghana and a businessman for illegally withdrawing 1.5 million US dollars from Bank of Ghana.

Annan pleaded not guilty to the charge of deceiving a public officer. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Margaret Awuni said, at the Accra Regional Tribunal on April 30, Annan pleaded to stand surety for Hajia Baby Ocansey.

The prosecutor said Annan informed the tribunal that he had properties required to execute the bail bond.

Chief Inspector Awuni said the tribunal ordered Detective Inspector Eric Amoateng to go with Annan to inspect the properties.

On May 8, they went to Teshie-Nungua where Annan identified house number 2, Ordia Close as the storey building. However, it was discovered that the house belonged to one Lawrence Telfer of Takoradi.

She said the accused person again led Detective Inspector Amoateng to Teiman village, near Oyarifa, but could not identify any poultry farm belonging to him.
