Babies and Octogenarians on Payroll: NSA audit exposes deep-rooted corruption

An audit of the National Service Authority (NSA) has revealed alarming payroll irregularities, including over 1,000 babies, some less than a year old and thousands of individuals above 80 years of age listed as active service personnel.

Why Gifty Oware-Mensah has not been suspended amid NSS scandal – GFA explains

"If the system were foolproof, we wouldn't have had children under one year without a Ghana Card being on our payroll," myjoyonline.com quoted an NSA official in an interview.

"We had almost 1,000 kids under one year on our system."

The audit also exposed glaring loopholes, with about 3,000 people over the age of 80 receiving monthly allowances despite the official national service exit age being 40.

"How come people above 40 years were found under the system?" the official is reported to have questioned.

The revelations have raised questions about the integrity of the NSA's Central Management System (CMS), which was abruptly suspended on June 18, 2025, by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama.

The suspension has since delayed this year's national service postings.

Amid the revelations, Acting Executive Director of the NSA, Ruth Seddoh, assured prospective service personnel that reforms are underway and that postings will resume on November 1, 2025.

"The transition team has been put in place, and the framework for the new system has been set up. I can assure prospective personnel to calm down; by November 1, postings will be done," she said.
