Azumah Nelson supports Malaria Eradication Programme

Accra, Sept. 25, GNA-Barima Professor 'Zoom Zoom' Azumah Nelson, Ghana's boxing legend, has called on Ghanaians to observe environmental cleanliness which is the safer way of avoiding malaria disease. He said environmental cleanliness played a very important role in the socio-economic development of every nation and that no nation could develop without it.

Azumah Nelson made the call in Accra on Thursday, when Add Your Voice Now, a Non-Governmental Organization championing Malaria Eradication through Sports (MES) programme called on him. He said the issue of malaria eradication should not be the sole responsibility of the government and that every individual or organization should take active part.

Enumerating his encounter with malaria, the boxing legend said the disease contributed to his inability to win his first fight with Jeff Fennech two years ago.

"I managed to win my second fight because I was with no malaria," he said, adding that, the disease, if not addressed early would adversely affect the capabilities of her sportsmen and women. Azumah Nelson commended the NGO for their initiative and called for more support for the organization to enable it to carry its duties.

Abdel Aziz Mohammed, Chairman of the Sports for the Physically Disabled also called on Ghanaians to organize clean-up campaigns in their communities to ensure a clean environment. The delegation was led by Mr. Kwabena Osei Bonsu, Chief Executive Officer of the company. He said the organization would continue to fight the disease until it is totally eliminated and called for support from all.
