Automate operations of MMT - Transport Minister

Mrs Dzifa Aku Attivor, the Minister of Transport, has tasked the Board of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) to help automate the operations of the company to ensure the efficient use of resources.

“In order to improve on the fortunes, I urge you to support management to come out with very innovative measures and adopt global best practices to reduce leakages,” she advised.

Mrs Attivor said this on Thursday at the inauguration of the reconstituted board of the Metro Mass Transit in Accra, following the dissolution of the old board because of internal wrangling, which threatened industrial harmony.

She noted that a report from PriceWaterhouseCoopers (Ghana), which was tasked to investigate the issues, had cited among other things, lapses in the procurement processes of the company and also recommended for the restructuring of the company to ensure effective management.

She, therefore, urged the new board to take up the recommendations and deal with them appropriately to ensure efficient management of resources in the Company.

She also called on them to liaise with the management to continue to invest in the procurement of buses to reduce the burden on the Government and shareholders of the MMT.

Mrs Attivor entreated the board to sustain the free bus ride for school children as well as for the holders of the EBAN Cards, who were usually aged people and were required to receive 50% reduction in fares.

She asked them to ensure that there was harmony among the work force to avoid industrial unrest and also desist from interfering in the day to day running of the Company.

Mr Leslie Tamakloe, the Board Chairman, on behalf of members, expressed their appreciation to the Government for the trust reposed in them, and pledged the readiness of the Board to work to ensure the growth of MMT.

He said the board would develop measures, which would ensure that all loop-holes in revenue generation were sealed.

Members of the board include, Mr Patrick Tei Kwapong, Mr Joseph Okine-Afranie, Mr Mark Ofosu-Ampadu, and Mr Patrick Akorli.

The rest are Ms Sheila Sampson, Brigadier General Ishmael Quartey, Mr Ellis Hugh-Tamakloe, and Mr Robert Karikari Darko.
