Attacks, killings of vendors causing people to stay away from the business – MoMo association

The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) has condemned the rising rate of killings targeted at Mobile Money operators across the country by armed robbers.

Speaking in an exclusive phone interview with GhanaWeb’s Mandy Agyemang on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the General Secretary of MMAAG, Evans Otumfuo, disclosed that recorded attacks on Mobile Money vendors have instilled fear among them, causing potential investors to shy away from the business.

“It is creating fear within the rank and file of the MoMo agents and potential individuals who want to venture into the business,” he said.

Highlighting the disturbing incidents, he said that approximately seven fatalities involving Mobile Money operators have been alarmingly recorded, with no action taken thus far.

“From January to mid-March, we have recorded over 7 fatalities. Others have found themselves in the hospital responding to treatment. We are hitting about 10 with just the fatalities across the country. Just last week, an agent who is also a teacher, was shot dead aside another person who was also killed. It is a really bad situation we find ourselves in,” he expressed worry.

Evans Otumfuo strongly bemoaned the lack of government intervention in addressing the rising security issues of Mobile Money operators.

He emphasised that the state is responsible for ensuring and prioritising the security of its citizens, urging them to urgently address the issue of these isolated robbery attacks targeting operators across the country.

“We are drawing the attention of the government to intervene in the situation. On issues that borders on security, the responsibility rests in the bosom of the state to act for us. Where we have gotten to with the business and the rate of attacks on the business, I don’t think it is appropriate for the association to rise even before the government intervenes. This is a clear security issue.

“… It is really becoming critical for us and beyond we being business people, we are also citizens of the country and if our investment in the business has made us targets for robbers, it is very disturbing,” he said.

Otumfuo further appealed to the government to provide them with the necessary resources and logistics to help sustain the business, as well as to ensure their security and protect them from further attacks.

“… we need government to commit certain resources to make sure we are being supported logistically and technically for the sustainability of the business. If government is able to procure alarm systems for us, it will alert community members when these robbers come to attack which will deter the robbers from returning and curb the rising attacks we are experiencing,” he concluded.

The association’s call comes in the wake of the recent brutal killing of a 25-year-old vendor in the Ashanti Region, bringing the number of reported deaths of vendors in the region to three.
