Atta Akyea cries foul over John Kumah's detention

A leading member of the NPP and lawyer Atta Akyea has questioned the continuous detention of a member of his party.

John Kuma who is on the NPPs Communication team has been in custody at the Economic and Organized Crimes Organization (EOCO) office on suspicions of bank fraud.

John Kumah was picked up more than 48 hours ago after participating in a radio discussion on an Accra based station.

The EOCO has refused to release him partly because a guy Mr. Kuma claims framed him up is yet to be contacted. Atta Akyea believes John Kuma is not being treated fairly.

He said “you don’t arrest a man who can be found. So why do you detain him last night. I don’t understand. A man sleeps overnight in cells. It took us some hustle to get to him as he is not eating.”

“Why is he being kept? I can’t understand. They are saying Henry Nyarko Appiah has not showed up so that should justify another man being incarcerated?” he asked.

Atta Akyea insisted that John Kumah is a notorious individual who is not a flight risk and therefore should not be detained.

Meanwhile, suspicions that John Kuma’s predicament is a result of a frame-up have been thrown out by a member of the NDCs communication team.

Fred Agbenyo says Mr Kuma’s detention is just part of the investigative process which should be allowed to work. He is not happy that some politicians seem to be interfering in a purely legal matter.

He said “it is only fair that we sit back and allow the law of the land to prevail. We don’t run to the defense of the person only because the person is our party member, our family member or our friend.”

Mr Agbenyo said there is no reason why anyone should want to set up John Kumah for any reason and that the law should take its full course so that the accused will either be exonerated or charged.
