Assembly Members Rush For Contracts

…PRESIDENT ORDERS THEM TO RESIGN

President Kufuor yesterday called on members of the District Assemblies wishing to be awarded contracts, to step down. “If you want to be a contractor, please stay out of the assembly so that you can bid and win contracts from the assembly,” he said.

As assembly members, he said, it was their duty to ensure that the Chief Executive became accountable to the people they represented.

He was addressing members and staff of the (KMA) in Kumasi yesterday.

“If a Chief Executive awards a contract which is shrouded in suspicion, it is the assembly members who have to work to unravel any deal involved in the award of the contract,” he said, adding that it would therefore not be right for the same watchdogs of the Chief Executive and the assembly as a whole to be awarded contracts which they should oversee.
